The Scholars (formerly Regional Associates) are selected at age 10 to attend classical ballet classes every Saturday throughout the academic year at The New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington.

The programme is designed to supplement the students' regular dance training and is taught by the NZSD faculty and distinguished guests. The Scholars programme comprises a ballet class and a flexibility/ strengthening programme with the core focus on ballet technique.

There are six levels within the programme, students enter at Level 1 when they are Year 6 at school. The frequency of classes increases as the student moves through the six levels.

The Scholars are drawn primarily from Wellington, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Horowhenua, however under special circumstances students from other regions are invited to participate.

The Scholars programme incurs term fees unlike the Associates programme, which is free.
